Mildred C. Hailey Youth Center – Roxbury, MA

The Mildred C. Hailey Apartment Complex (Boston Housing Authority) received a grant to create a music technology space inside their youth center. A cinder block room approximately 10 x 12 was the canvas to work with. Additional challenges in the room were abundant plumbing, conduit, and openings from utility infrastructure no longer in use. Leadership and community members expressed interest in music production, recording and podcasting.

Wondersmith Audio provided the acoustic design of the room, interior design guidance, renovation including acoustic treatment and lighting updates, as well as all furniture, hardware, software, and installation. The project began with a teen focus group session and concluded with training for MCHYC users. The room’s appearance changed dramatically, and now features custom acoustic wall and ceiling treatments, a Logic Pro and Ableton centered production workstation, Neumann monitoring, and SSL audio interface.
